Liverpool Company Becomes First In UK To Receive European Eco-Label
16th October 2007
A Liverpool company which has created a range of environmentally friendly cleaning products has become the first in the UK to be awarded the European Eco-label by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
Delphis International Limited t/a DelphisEco used cutting edge technology to develop a range of industrial strength products for professional cleaners which are manufactured from natural, environmentally friendly materials. The products adhere to strict ecological criteria and represent a major breakthrough in the cleaning industry.
The company is now expanding with the help of Merseyside Special Investment Fund after the accreditation from Defra saw the company’s sales soar.
Delphis has raised a funding package which includes a £75k loan from MSIF’s Small Firms Fund and support from the NatWest.
The company’s products include multi-purpose cleaner, degreaser, air neutraliser, washing-up liquid, toilet cleaner, handwash, masonry and stone cleaner, and anti-bacterial sanitiser.
Delphis International was set up earlier this year and is run by directors Michele Dematteis, John Holmes and Paul Manchester.
Managing Director Mr Dematteis said: “Traditional cleaning agents contain highly toxic chemicals making them dangerous for the user and the environment. Strict legislation can also mean that companies are fined if they are found to be causing pollution. Our products are the only proven, ecological cleaning products on the market which is why we have been awarded the European Eco-label.
“We have just secured a deal with Bunzl, the UK’s largest supplier of janitorial, cleaning and hygiene products and the Merseyside Forum for Arts & Sculpture who have used our stone and masonry cleaners on a variety of conservation projects. We also have customers in the agricultural, hospitality and food sectors.
“The money from MSIF has enabled us to cope with the increased demand for our products. We now want to develop new product ranges and penetrate new markets including the health sector, leisure industry, local government and the marine industry.
Paul Humphray, investment manager of MSIF’s Small Firms Fund said: “The impact on the environment from toxins and chemicals has been well publicised. This unique product range from Delphis is set to revolutionise the cleaning industry and the company has already attracted some blue chip clients. We are pleased to be supporting them and think the business will do very well.”
Delphis currently employs five staff at its premises in Sefton Business Park and this figure is expected to treble over the next three years. Turnover is projected to reach £4m by 2010.
