TASTE OF SUCCESS FOR FOOD COMPANY

13th December 2006

ONE of Liverpool’s premier food companies is expanding, thanks to backing from Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF).

Family-run Zeniou Food Services are catering butchers, supplying high quality fresh and frozen meat and fish to local restaurants. Customers include the renowned Japanese restaurant Sapporo Teppanyaki, Retsina Greek Restaurant, Christakis Greek Taverna, Savina Mexican Restaurant, and the St. Petersburg Russian Restaurant.

The business has recently relocated from Brunswick Business Centre to a state of the art warehouse in Maritime Enterprise Park in Bootle.

Zeniou received a package of almost £100,000. This included a £35,000 loan from MSIF’s Small Firms Fund, a £20,000 grant from South Sefton Partnership, and directors’ own investment of £40,000.

Following an extensive refurbishment of the 2600 sq ft warehouse in Bootle, it now features a state-of-the-art chiller, freezer, temperature controlled preparation room, office space, and a loading bay. The family also made a conscious decision to fit the warehouse out with ‘eco-friendly’ products, such as low-emission, high efficiency freezers.

The firm was set up 15 years ago by husband and wife team Bandelis and Androulla Zeniou, who have been in the catering business for 35 years. Their sons Banico and Dimitris now also help run the company.

Sales director Banico Zeniou said: “The investment and support we have received from MSIF has been crucial in making the move possible. It will allow our business to continue to grow and we have already bought a third van and taken on a full time driver, as well as moving to these superb new premises. We are also aiming to broaden our customer base.”

Investment manager Alan Birkett from MSIF said: “We were delighted to support this well established family owned business. Zeniou Food Services has around 100 customers in the North West and we are sure the relocation will help them expand even further.”

Zeniou Food Services currently employs six full-time staff and three part time, and hopes this will triple over the next three years. Turnover is steadily increasing and is also expected to triple over the same period.
