What sort of businesses are you working with at the moment?
I am working with businesses operating in a range of sectors including, construction, health & wellbeing, recycling and tourism.
I am seeing a lot of businesses that will benefit from the new Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund to be launched in a few months.
What advice would you give to a business seeking funding to help speed up the investment process?
Make sure that you can provide information to your funders in a timely fashion, especially financial information.
How did the businesses you are working with get introduced to you?
Mainly through introducers like Langtons and MC Vanguard.
How do you think Brexit/the Trump administration will affect local businesses if at all? And if you do think it could affect them, what strategies would you put in place to try to prevent it?
Any business that imports or exports is going to be affected in some way – good or bad.
What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a business?
Don’t be proud – get some early revenue “on the board” – beg if you have to!
What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of expanding an existing business?
Make sure you think about the working capital that you will need to fund the expansion and try not to commit to too much fixed cost ahead of revenues.
What piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to sell a business?
Make sure you have dealt with the skeletons in your closet and ensure that you can provide the information a purchaser will need quickly to them – especially management accounts; it will build their confidence in you/your business.
What do you love most about your job?
Meeting lots of different management teams making money from lots of different business models in different industries.
