Shining the Spotlight on MSIF Chairman, John O’Brien

Over the upcoming months, we will be introducing you to our team here at MSIF through our weekly ‘spotlight’ series.

Join us as you get to know more about our likes and dislikes, favourite football teams and most importantly, how we are aiming to help as many businesses as we can across the region!

First up… our Chairman, John O’Brien.

Please introduce yourself and what do you do for MSIF?
My name is John O’Brien and I am the Chair of MSIF, currently operating as Interim Executive Chair. I act as a sounding-board and support for the management team, and I am involved in key decisions facing MSIF with the Board. I also set strategy and direction for the business and serve as an ambassador/link to key stakeholders.

What did you do before joining MSIF?
My last full time role was a partner in a global accountancy firm. I advised businesses on acquisitions and disposals. Prior to this, I was a senior partner for a Liverpool office before retiring. Now, I like to enjoy my time playing golf and going on walks with my wife.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Interaction with people is what I enjoy the most and see them develop. I am also very proud to work with a company that makes a real difference for local businesses and the LCR economy.

How do you spend your downtime?
As mentioned, I like to spend my downtime playing golf. I am also an avid Everton supporter! Outside of this, I enjoy lots of walking with my grown up children and long-suffering wife.

What is your favourite thing to do in Liverpool?
Friday night dinner at Casa Italia with the family.

MSIF turns 25 this year. What do you envision for the next 25 years?
I see MSIF continuing to play a critical role in the LCR economy, and wider areas, providing funds and advice to SMEs for growth and development; being heard as the voice of SME’s – particularly on finance.

If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring business owners, what would it be?
BE AMBITIOUS! Why can’t it be you?! Hard work goes a long way to making a business successful.

And finally, what’s your favourite colour… red… or blue?
